Guide to skiing in Heavenly, USA
The ski resort of Heavenly offers some astounding views from its slopes. Kuoni ski expert Jemma Allerton-Griffiths, buckles up her ski boots to find out why this area has some of the best skiing in the USA.
Where is Heavenly ski resort?
Heavenly ski resort has an intriguing split personality. Located on the California-Nevada border in South Lake Tahoe, you can find a slow pace of life on the California side, with rustic cabins and lodges. This chilled vibe blurs into Nevada’s 24-hour party lifestyle, with casinos dominating the horizon.
A three-hour drive from San Francisco, Heavenly is easy to work into a California or Nevada road trip. There are slopes for all levels here, with the majority suitable for a moderate level, and access to the mountain is via a high-speed gondola in the centre of town. Lift passes start from $125 per day, with multiple-day discounts bringing the price down.
Next to the gondola is a well-stocked ski rental store with everything you could possibly need for a day on the slopes. It takes around 15-20 minutes to get onto the mountain and you can stop half way at an observation platform, which offers some of the most breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe.
Ski schools in Heavenly
At the top, you’ll find restaurants, bars and meeting points for the ski schools. Tuition here is second-to-none and we can arrange group or private lessons, or a guide if you’re an advanced skier and want to get the most out of your slope-time. Each winter finds Heavenly under a huge dump of snow and you’ll find spectacular tree skiing, snow-packed cruisers and expert runs with no-mercy names such as the Gunbarrel.
The highlight of the resort for me is that you face Lake Tahoe when skiing down the mountain. It really is the most incredible view. Heavenly’s split personality strikes again when on parts of the mountain, you can gaze over the Nevada Desert.
When is Lake Tahoe’s ski season?
The ski season runs from November to April and there are a whole host of activities off the slopes, from ice skating at Heavenly Village to hot springs overlooking the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The resort is only 50-minutes from the bright lights of Reno, too, with its amazing shopping, nightlife and entertainment.
No snow session is complete without après ski. This state-straddling resort offers everything from a quiet meal and sipping hot chocolate in a cosy bar while listening to live music; to partying until dawn, playing the slot machines and watching showgirls in sensational costumes.
Heavenly has the slopes, the views and après ski like nowhere else on earth. I highly recommend it.
