Best time to visit Cancun

The popular beach resorts of Cancun, the Riviera Maya and Tulum have a tropical climate which results in dry and pleasant winters and hot, humid and often rainy summers. Most visitors head here in search of winter sun, so December to April is the busiest period. Officially, the region’s hurricane season runs from June to mid-November with the most active months being September and October.

Here’s our month-by-month guide to Cancun's weather and climate.

Cancun in January

Alongside December and February, January is the best time of year to visit Cancun. It is the dry season and the temperatures and humidity levels are very pleasant. It is also one of the most popular times as North Americans and Europeans head south for some sunshine and warmth.

Cancun in February

February is largely dry and sunny making the resorts of the Cancun a fantastic location for a half term holiday or a luxury winter getaway. Average temperatures are in the lows to mid-20s, with the low temperatures rarely, if ever dropping below 20 degrees Celsius. Although not at its warmest, the sea is a pleasant temperature, perfect for swimming.

Cancun in March

Again, March is a popular time to visit the Yucatan Peninsula’s shores. For universities in the United States of America, March marks the beginning of the Spring Break season and the sun, sea and sand of this region are major draws for students celebrating. Resorts can get very busy during this time, perfect if you’re looking for a lively atmosphere. For a more tranquil atmosphere, consider visiting in January or February (before or after the week of half term).

Cancun in April

The climate in Cancun is tropical and in April, you start to feel the effects of this. The temperatures and humidity will start to rise slightly this month but it’s good time to visit Cancun as it’s the driest time of year with just a few days of rain on average. There should be plenty of warm sunny days and delightfully warm seas making it a great family holiday destination if Easter happens to fall in April.

Cancun in May

The weather in Cancun is warm and humid this month but it is also relatively dry with just five days of rain on average. The temperatures and humidity continue to rise but the rainfall amounts are not yet significant. The highs should be somewhere in the low to mid 30s with average lows dipping no further than 24 degrees Celsius. The sea temperatures are approximately 28 degrees resulting in an upturn in the amount and variety of marine life – the second half of the month is a great time to dive off the Caribbean coast.

Cancun in June

It’s in June, the official start to summer, that the risk of rainfall increases and the humidity will be high. It’s also the beginning of hurricane season, although it’s not at the peak. If you’re looking for the best-value escapes, you’ll find some fantastic offers in May and June as the high season comes to an end. June also marks the first full month of the whale shark season with shark-watching tours and diving expeditions leaving from Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

Cancun in July

Rain amounts increase again in July and the humidity levels can rise to a rather stifling 97%; however, you can always take a dip in the pool or sea to cool down. In the first half of the month, you may get a good deal on your resort but later in the month – when the European school holidays start – Cancun will be much busier.

Cancun in August

Much like July, August is hot and humid; in fact this is the warmest month of the year. There is also a further increased chance of rain storms. The average high temperature will be in the mid-30s, with particularly warm weather in late August.

Cancun in September

While there is an increased risk of hurricanes affecting the Caribbean coast resorts this month, the chances of the coastal region being affected by a tropical storm are relatively slim. It’s the rainiest month, however there still a number of lovely sunny days. When it does rain, it tends to be intense and prolonged afternoon showers.

Cancun in October

October marks the beginning of the end of the hot and humid conditions. While storms are relatively rare, it’s worth noting that there is still a risk of tropical storms along the coast as it’s still the peak of the hurricane season in the Caribbean. This is one of the Cancun’s quietest months so you can often get some great offers.

Cancun in November

Dryer, cooler and less humid, November is an excellent time to visit Cancun before the festive holiday makers arrive. There’s still chance of rain (as there is year round), however there is considerably less than during the summer months. The high temperatures in Cancun still reach the low-30s and the average is in the mid-20s.

Cancun in December

December marks the start of the high season in on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. It’s also the official start of the dry season and temperatures tend to hover around a very pleasant 24 degrees Celsius so it’s generally considered to be the best time to visit Cancun. If you’re planning a beach escape this month (particularly over the Christmas and New Year period), we recommend booking early as our featured resorts fill up quickly.
