Where to go in Costa Rica, from mesmerising Monteverde and mountainous national parks to surfers’ paradises on the Pacific and Caribbean Coasts

If you’re flying into San José then a good way to start your Costa Rica trip is to explore the capital first, before heading to the nearby Central Valley and Northern Highlands; here you’ll be able to lap up picturesque scenery ranging from lowland volcanoes to sprawling coffee plantations.

From the centre of Costa Rica, you can then head west to its Pacific Coast or east to the shores of the Caribbean Sea. The Pacific Coast is home to breathtaking national parks including Manuel Antonio and Corcovado and snorkelling-friendly beaches in Papagayo, while the Caribbean side is full of untouched rainforest and beautiful wildlife including toucans and monkeys – depending on when you visit, you may even get the chance to watch sea turtles laying eggs on the beach at Tortuguero.
