Tom Waite shares his top 10 reasons for booking our 12-night Highlights of Brazil tour with an expert guide.

Iguaçu Falls

Possibly the most spectacular waterfalls in the world. There are so many vantage points, from right up close at the Devil’s Throat, to afar where the full array of falls is visible (there are up to 300 individual falls depending on the time of year – at high water times they start merging into fewer, larger falls). It’s really important to see both sides of the falls, but the tour also includes an exhilarating boat ride to the base of the falls, where you invariably get soaked!

“My reason to visit Brazil has to be all about Iguaçu Falls. They are absolutely stunning and need to be seen to be believed! Standing on the edge of the falls at the Devil’s Throat is a real rush. The tour is also great as you get to experience both sides of the falls, which is a must to make the most of the experience.”

The Corcovado, Rio de Janeiro

One of the world’s most recognisable landmarks. The view from the platform beneath the Christ the Redeemer is astonishing!

The beaches of Rio

Ipanema, Copacabana – even the names sound exciting. Rio life is defined by what happens on these beaches!

The Pelourhino, Salvador

Salvador was previously a capital of Brazil and full of colonial era architecture. It also has a noticeable African vibe making the culture very distinct from the more European south and the more indigenous Amazon.

The mighty Amazon

Head to Manaus and stay in a jungle lodge for a couple of days to experience the wilderness that is the Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest!

“Cruising serenely upstream from vibrant Manaus was just breathtaking! Standing on the prow of the Amazon Clipper Premium, I stood mesmerised for what seemed like hours as the sunset danced a kaleidoscope of colours across the sky, with each brilliantly illuminated cloud reflected perfectly in the vast, silent, inky black waters of the Rio Negro below.”

Churrascaria & Caipirinhas

Churrascaria is the Brazilian barbecue and a national institution that’s becoming popular all over the world. It would be amiss not to wash the endless carnivorous delights down with the national cocktail, the Cairpirinha – the most addictive cocktail in the world (in my opinion)!

Exotic fruit

This tour includes a fascinating tasting session at a local fruit market, a great opportunity to taste some of Brazil’s most recognisable exports, as well as a few that will be less familiar to European eyes and taste buds.

Beach extension

Just two hours from Rio is Buzios, South America’s most fashionable beach resort often described as the ‘Latin St Tropez’ and a place where there’s endless beaches, bars, restaurants and boutiques. A great place to simply hang out.
